The Wales region

Covering the whole of the country, the Wales region works with a wide variety of different customers. Wales is mainly a rural country, so the Welsh economy has always had a strong agricultural sector, because the mountains and mild, wet climate make it ideal for grazing livestock.

In recent years, the country’s dependence on agriculture has fallen, as the majority of the population now lives in the towns and cities of South Wales. This change is reflected in the regional business – in fact, only 34% of our policies are held by farming customers, while 42% are commercial.

Meet some of the Agents

Nathan Conlon, Wider Market Agent (Bridgend and The Vale)

I’ve always been interested in the rural lifestyle, but when I was studying for my business studies degree, I thought I’d be a stockbroker in London. Then when I graduated, I realised I didn’t want to leave my rural roots. After working as a banking advisor and a mortgage advisor, I joined NFU Mutual as a branch manager.

I spent three years building that business and then became an Agent Partner. I do put the hours in, like going to the local point-to-point at the weekend. But I love it and my family are very supportive. I love business and I’m interested in farming, so it’s perfect for me. It really is a lifestyle rather than a job.

Mark Roberts, Senior Agent (Wrexham)

After working in financial services, I joined the Wrexham agency as an assistant in 2013 and replaced the Senior Agent a year later. I’d always wanted to run my own company, but while I was building my career it never felt like the right time. After I took redundancy, NFU Mutual offered that opportunity while minimising the risk.

I could put the skills I’d learned throughout my career to good use. I love the variety of being an Agent, from meeting customers and understanding their businesses, to building and developing a fantastic team. No two days are the same and making sure you have a flexible wardrobe of shoes, wellies, work boots and matching clothes takes some getting used to!

Lowri Roberts, Farming Agent (Carmarthenshire Central)

I was brought up on a small sheep farm in North Wales and now live on a dairy farm in Pembrokeshire, so I’ve always had a keen interest in agriculture. After graduating in Business Management and Marketing, I joined the NFU Mutual graduate scheme, which gave me valuable experience of the insurance industry.

In 2018, I became a Sales Development Consultant and then managed the Hay-on-Wye agency for six months, after a long-standing Agent and NFU Cymru Group Secretary retired. In 2020, I moved to the Carmarthen and St Clears agency as an Agent and NFU Cymru Group Secretary. It’s an exciting new challenge and gives me the chance to do what I enjoy – engaging with NFU Cymru members and the local farming community.
