The Northern Ireland region

We’ve been operating in Northern Ireland since 1931 and work closely with the Ulster Farmers Union. This means we have a very strong penetration into farming and rural communities, based on delivering local, personal service. We serve customers who cover the entire food chain, from field to fork, as well as a variety of diversified rural businesses. With strong brand awareness generating high levels of customer loyalty, we’re always looking to offer new products and services that protect their businesses or personal wealth.

This means there are always opportunities for your agency to grow, alongside the support you need to achieve it. We’ve a strong Financial Services division with a team of Financial Consultants who you’ll work alongside to support your clients’ Financial Planning needs. This will provide another income stream to your agency business.

Meet some of the Agents

Brian Prue, Senior Agent (Limavady)

I always had an interest in farming, so when I looked at being an Agent, the link to the Ulster Farmers Union was a hook for me. That connection’s so valuable for customer loyalty. Farming is their life, so it’s not just about insurance, it’s about representing them.

What sets us apart? I think the fact that the company’s more than 100 years old and I’ve been an Agent for 20 years gives our customers confidence in our ability to look after their interests. We also have a strong focus on customer service, based on how we deal with claims. A good outcome to a claim is very important to customers and by getting it right, we have a great business retention rate.

Wendy Kerr, Senior Agent (Tyrone South)

I grew up on a dairy farm and knew about NFU Mutual and its links to the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU). So, after graduating in Agriculture in 2000, I became an Agent. I really enjoy being my own boss and NFU Mutual has supported me every step of the way. They’re always looking at new approaches to benefit both our business and theirs – we often take part in pilot schemes, such as using iPads on client visits.

The link to the UFU helps our business, too. Farmers see us as a one-stop shop for any issue, whether it’s insurance related or not. Going to UFU meetings also helps me get to know my customers socially, which strengthens that bond.

Chris Donaldson, Farming Agent (Armagh South)

I grew up on a farm insured by NFU Mutual and during my Agriculture and Marketing degree, I spent a year out working for the Ulster Farmers Union. So, when I graduated it seemed natural to join NFU Mutual, with its links to the union. I started as a sales associate in the agency and this was a stepping stone to becoming a Partner three years later, in 2006.

There are three Partners and we’ve built the agency around our strengths. So, Paul has a property background and is great at facilities, Howard looks at the vision and goals and I enjoy staff management and sales. But we’re a true partnership, leading a team and making decisions together.
