The North East region

The North East region covers a large area from Northumberland in the north to Lincolnshire in the south. Our agencies all have their own distinct personalities, but they share the same aim – to provide high levels of service that retain customers, win new business and deliver strong growth.

While we still have a large proportion of farming customers and continue to gain new ones, a quarter of our business is in wider commercial insurance. As one of our Agents, you can expect to develop a strong business relationship with our regional team and enjoy all the support you need to reach your goals.

Meet some of the Agents

Chris Dale, Senior Agent (Derby South)

I used to be a CEO in a multinational insurance brokerage and now, as an NFU Mutual Agent, I’m using all that experience but still testing and developing myself every day. On any day I could be a business leader, HR manager, finance director or in front of a customer and I receive a lot of support from NFU Mutual along the way.

There’s a strong infrastructure to help you in areas such as marketing and gaining commercial business, but you still have the autonomy to push your business forward. Being the local NFU Group Secretary adds another dimension. You’re a focal point for farmers, so it’s a great way to stay relevant to a big proportion of the local customer base. It feels like I’m giving back to an industry that’s been so integral to our success.

Tom Murray, Senior Agent (Selby)

After college, I didn’t want to go to university, so I joined NFU Mutual in 2011. After working in an agency, I became one of their first trainee Agents, developing my skills on placements in different agencies. At my first agency in Skipton and now in Selby, NFU Mutual has always supported me.

I’ve been on a variety of training programmes and now they’re backing my Executive MBA at Cranfield University, alongside my CII studies. And when I proposed a joint investment to restructure the Selby agency and increase new business by looking at sectors outside farming, they backed me all the way. I enjoy creating plans, getting people behind them and being able to drive change quickly.

Greg Proll, Senior Agent (North Riding and South Durham)

I enjoy being a self-employed Agent because it gives me the flexibility and freedom to come up with solutions to problems and to use my own ideas to manage and grow the agency. What I put into running the agency not only makes a difference for my customers, but it also influences what I get out of it too.

For me, it’s this freedom to explore your own ideas and come up with innovative solutions to client problems or managing the agency that gives it an advantage over being employed by someone else. I don’t have to conform to a rigid structure, so I can grow the agency, develop my team and help and advise customers in my own way to achieve the best outcomes but always knowing the support of the NFU Mutual is there.
